  3.   SETTINGS - Assessment settings that is:
  • Number of attempts allowed – use these options to determine how many times a candidate may take the assessment per schedule - for high stakes this should be set to 1. Please note: this is not the maximum number of times a learner can take the assessment before the system won’t allow them to be scheduled for it again.
  • 'Which attempt counts' – if candidates have multiple attempts you can select which attempts counts: best attempt or last attempt. This is mostly used in formative assessments.
  • Max time allowed for each attempt (minutes) – use this dropdown to select the time a candidate has for each attempt or enter your custom value.
  • Extra Time – the author of an assessment can predetermine how much extra time is allotted for candidates with particular needs. Also see 'Extra time for candidates with particular needs'.
  • 'Assessment Scale' – selecting the score to grade conversion and what the pass mark is done via "Assessment Form Options: determining Grades and Pass Mark"

4. CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE

Summary:
In Cirrus you can easily decide what results and feedback to show to candidates.
  • Automatically show feedback reports immediately after the test and on the candidate dashboard.
  • Show feedback reports upon publication - where you control the moment of publication.
  • Plan a Review Session to temporarily show results and feedback - in a controlled setting if you want to.
  • Show feedback on questions or even answer alternatives (MC) during the assessment.
  • Show nothing.

This article will show you how to set this. Be sure to check out the example ('what does it look like for the candidate') in our article on Candidate feedback in Delivery.

'Show candidate results' – these options determine what kind of results and / or feedback is shown during or after the assessment.

(A) 'When to show': First you use the dropdown to select when results and/or scores will be shown: - automatically, upon publication.

  • Never - results and score will never be shown. The candidate will exit the exam after the finish page. On the candidate dashboard the exam will be listed but it will state 'not disclosed' in the score column. See an example of 'never'
  • When assessor decides - show the feedback and results report upon publication - where you control the moment of publication via the chosen Marking workflow setup.
  • After each attempt / After last attempt - automatically show the selected feedback and results report immediately after the test and on the candidate dashboard.
  • Scheduling a Review Session - this is not part of the dropdown but by scheduling a Review Session you can plan to temporarily- in a controlled setting if you want to - or permanently show results and feedback to candidates. Note that this also offers more options with regards to feedback shown for Essay questions and is similar to scheduling and assessment.

(B) 'What to show': Next you select what result and scores will be shown using feedback report pages for the candidate:

  • Show only passed/failedSee an example.
  • Summary - shows the full questions and what the candidate scored per question (but not what answer option was correct / what candidate filled out). See an example
  • Detailed - shows the full questions, the correct answer for each question and what the candidate answered and scored. See an example
  • Score report - This is a favourite as it shows achievement on Learning Objectives / Subjects without disclosing any of the questions or answers.

(C) Feedback during the assessment: In stead of just showing these report pages after hand-in, the next options offer you the possibility to show feedback on questions during the assessment:

Question navigation – define whether or not you want a candidate to be able to navigate freely between questions. You also have the option to randomise the order of the questions in the assessment so that each candidate sees the questions in a different order.

SECURITY – these options allow you to set extra security for an assessment.

  • ‘Safe exam browser’ - For example, if it is a high stakes exam, use this ‘Lock-down browser’ option to ensure that a candidate cannot exit the browser window while the assessment is in progress. To use this option, you will need to perform a check on whether the examination facilities and your Cirrus setup support this extra layer of security. Read more about SEB.
  • ‘Use PIN’ option sets a PIN on the assessment so that a candidate cannot begin the assessment unless they enter this PIN. The PIN can be given to an Invigilator who informs the candidates at the beginning of the assessment so they are able to start. Read more about the invigilator.

Please note when using remote proctoring:  SEB and PIN should be OFF

Do not check the options for using ‘Safe exam browser’ and ‘Use PIN’ or 'Extra Time'. These will prevent correct delivery of your assessments as they interfere with the remote proctoring service.

TOOLS - this section lets you give candidates access to an on-screen calculator (more tools will follow) during the assessment by adding a calculator button to the top bar in candidate delivery:

When you are happy with these settings, you’re ready to move to Step 3 – Question Selection.
